The Fernandina Beach restaurant declared structurally dangerous by the city

FERNANDINA BEACH, Florida – A restaurant in Fernandina Beach has been declared structurally unsafe.

The town of Fernandina Beach has condemned the Bretts Waterway Café over “the active collapse of a concrete double-tee structural member.”

The cafe is located over the water in the marina. A conviction notice fell on Friday. The city said many shortcomings were observed.

When News4Jax reporter Marilyn Parker came by on Saturday, people were still inside the Café.

There may not be an immediate threat, but in the conviction notice, engineers said the structure was life threatening.

The preliminary structural assessment indicates that staff believe the Café has passed its useful life and could suffer significant damage during a hurricane or other high wind events.

The notice also indicates that there is a high risk of failure of the substructure, collateral damage and necessary repairs.

Within 60 days, they must obtain permits and start working on the structure.

They have until September 2 to repair the building or it will be released by the city.
