Shoreham offers ‘quaint village’ living with beach amenities

THE SCOOP Shoreham offers a bucolic setting that includes a quaint village incorporated with many amenities, says Brookhaven Town Councilor Jane Bonner.

The Village of Shoreham and the Hamlet of East Shoreham are independent of each other but share a postcode and a school district. The area, Bonner says, includes several private beaches and a community beach for residents of the town of Brookhaven.

Edward Weiss, the mayor of the village of Shoreham, says there has been recent repaving and drainage work in the area. He describes the village, which celebrated its centenary in 2013, as a tight-knit community with many social events including the July 4th Parade, an Olympic-style event for children and the long-running tennis tournament of the party. work.

A former DeLalio sod farm is being converted to a 60-acre solar farm, and construction recently began to develop the recently closed Tallgrass Golf Course into the state’s second largest commercial solar panel.

“Over the lifespan of these solar farms, which is approximately 20 years, there will be over $ 15 million in PILOT payments to the school district,” Bonner said.

Additional solar development has been proposed for 350 acres near the site of the decommissioned Shoreham nuclear power plant, but lawmakers in June approved a measure that extends the pine barrens to that area.

State Assembly Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), who sponsored the legislation with Sen. Kenneth LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) told Newsday in June that the passage was helping protect “virgin coastal forest” in Shoreham.

The most common housing style in the community is Colonial, although the village offers a more eclectic mix, including European-designed homes, says Rose Marie Princi of Coldwell Banker Distinctive Homes. The price range, she adds, ranges from around $ 325,000 to over $ 1 million for some waterfront homes. Inventory in the village is not large, but comes in spurts, she said. There has also been some turnover through Shoreham with “a lot of young people coming in, so we’re seeing a change in the population,” Princi says.

The village owns the Shoreham Country Club. Shoreham is also home to the former laboratory of Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American scientist who invented the components of modern electricity and radio. The long-vacant lab, Bonner says, is currently being transformed into a science museum and learning center.
