Navarre Beach amenities receive $ 2 million in modernization, from jetty to washroom

Several areas in and around Navarre Beach are currently under construction as the county undertakes two separate projects totaling more than $ 2 million to modernize the fishing pier, toilets, showers and boardwalks leading to the Beach.

Almost a year after its start, the complete redevelopment of the Navarre Beach fishing pier has officially started. The $ 1.12 million project, funded in part by tourism development tax reserves and general fund reserves, began in August, although the contractor worked to acquire and process the appropriate materials before officially start renovating the pier.

“They don’t have this special material just sitting on a yard anywhere,” County Engineer Roger Blaylock said. “The material had to come in and be processed to a higher standard than what you would buy from a Lowe’s or Navarre Lumber. “

Treated lumber will replace existing wood planks, which fall apart faster than repair crews can fix.

Rotten planks are seen along the Navarre Pier on Friday, January 11, 2019. The pier is expected to undergo a major renovation this year with new decking material.

The entrepreneur should officially start to mobilize on the Navarre pier in the next two weeks. Crews will have 90 days from the start of work on the jetty to complete the bridge repair process.

Sections of the jetty should be closed periodically as crews complete the necessary work.

In addition to the pier, the contract also provides for the redevelopment of the steps leading to the pier, the disabled ramp, several sections between the washrooms and the Windjammer’s restaurant and several pedestrian crossings.

Toilets, showers also being replaced

A separate and simultaneous contract is also in progress to the left of the pier. The toilet replacement project, priced at $ 979,000, began in December and is expected to be completed in late May or early June.

“The oldest restroom on the beach is being replaced, at Walkover 40B,” Blaylock said. “The next toilet complex will match the other three at Navarre Beach Marine Park, and then the old one will be demolished when completed.”

The bathroom project will include a walkway reconnecting it to the existing walkway that crosses the sand dunes and will also feature two shower towers.

Improvements to the Navarre Park:New playground and paddling pool coming to Navarre Park for $ 3.3 million upgrade

Julie White, director of the Santa Rosa County Tourism Development Board, said the improvements to the bridge, washrooms, showers and walkways will help provide better services and a better atmosphere for people who come to visit the beach in Navarre.

“Upgrading our amenities for tourists is part of what we fund, it’s a great reinvestment of tourism tax money,” White said. “As for the part funded by the county, this is also a necessary improvement, for everyone, including tourists and locals. Any kind of enhancement like this contributes to the aesthetics and really makes it a nicer place to visit.

The latest improvements are among several that have taken place at Navarre Beach over the past year. In June, officials cut the ribbon of a project that provided more than 200 parking spaces, six of which are accessible to Americans with disabilities, an accessible beach access boardwalk, two outdoor showers, a washroom pavilion and an observation platform.

In October, the county was granted a plot of land in the marine park area that will be earmarked for conservation so that it cannot be developed. Authorities plan to install minor equipment such as a kayak launch pad or a pavilion.
